In this post-9/11 world the word “patriot” is frequently, and often inappropriately, applied. Memorial Day was set aside to honor the true patriots: the men and women of the uniformed services who offer the best they have in defense of their country, and who are willing to give “the last full measure of devotion,” as Abraham Lincoln put it.

The meaning and true spirit of Memorial Day seems lost to most Americans. Not to Graham O’Donahoe of Northfield. With a flag and wreath his only props and a group of fewer than a dozen his audience, he single-handedly observed Memorial Day for his community, speaking truth to the frippery that these days passes for “celebration” of what should be a solemn occasion.

As a nation we have forgotten much of what is important in our history and in what should be our national character. O’Donahoe speaks courageously from the heart and from experience about the nature of patriotism and the day that honors it.

He says he will continue his observation of the day alone if need be, because “it’s important.” We would all do well to emulate O’Donahoe in his commitment to the ideals that are important to America, in his dedication to those who serve America, and in his conviction that a single voice can make a difference in America.
