ESSEX — A 90-year-old Vermont man has belatedly received medals he was due for bravery and honor during World War II.
Leonard Pilus was honored Friday night at a memorial service for fallen soldiers at the First Congregational Church in his hometown of Essex.
Vermont Air Guard Gen. Steven Cray told the gathering that Pilus was in the first wave of attacks on Omaha Beach in France on D-Day in 1944.
