RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s president has appointed the members of a truth commission that will investigate cases of murder and torture committed by the military dictatorship that ruled between 1964 and 1985.

The seven appointees’ names were published in the federal registry Friday. They include the attorney who represented President Dilma Rousseff against charges filed by the military regime when was a leftist guerilla who was detained and tortured.

The commission’s members will take office Wednesday. They will have two years to investigate abuses committed under military rule.

Its report won’t result in prosecutions, however. Brazil approved a law in 1979 granting amnesty for political crimes committed during the dictatorship.
