• Waitsfield man sentenced for trying to elude DUI stop

    WAITSFIELD — A Waitsfield man was sentenced on charges of a second offense of driving under the influence, attempting to elude a police officer and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

    In Barre criminal court, Raymond Arthur Smith, 62, was sentenced to one to four years pre-approved furlough and ordered to undergo substance abuse programming.

    He also was ordered to pay $633 in fines and court surcharges.

    According to court documents, police on the night of Aug. 1 observed Smith traveling approximately 100 mph on Interstate 89 in Middlesex.

    According to police, Smith failed to yield his vehicle after police activated their blue lights.
