Until March 21, Vermont Yankee was contributing up to $6 million annually to the Clean Energy Development Fund under an agreement with a limited time frame with the state that has now expired. Meanwhile, a long-term tax stabilization agreement remains in effect for as long as the plant operates in Vermont, which it is still doing.
Yet, some in our state Legislature now want to violate the letter and spirit of both agreements and increase the tax stabilization amount by a whopping amount — a 140 percent increase from $5 million to $12 million annually. This superfluous tax has many Vermont workers worried and wondering if their companies will be next.
Who’s to say Montpelier won’t continue to target businesses to beef-up the General Fund or pad other special interest funds?
The tax is bad for employment, and bad for Vermont. When will politicians learn to not kill the goose?
