BARRE — A Montpelier man is going to prison for stealing more than $6,000 in high-tech optical equipment from his employer, SUSS Micro Tech in Waterbury.

Steven Boraker, 43, was in Barre criminal court Tuesday, when he was sentenced to one to four years, all suspended except for 60 days, and fined $282 on one count of felony grand larceny and one count of possession of stolen property. In the plea agreement, three other counts of grand larceny and two counts of petit larceny were dropped.

According to court papers, police began investigating the thefts of seven pieces of equipment from SUSS Micro Tech in August. Officials at the company told police that the equipment, which is used to build large microscopes, had gone missing and they had found the items for sale on the online auction site eBay. The seller had placed the equipment for a total of $762. Police traced the eBay account to Boraker.

During the investigation police learned that Boraker had been convicted after a 2007 investigation by the Lebanon (N.H.) Police Department into the theft of more than $20,000 worth of equipment from his former employer, Stryker Biotech, and its placement for sale on eBay. Boraker was on probation while police investigated the SUSS Micro Tech thefts.

Police executing a search warrant found several of the missing pieces of SUSS Micro Tech equipment at Boraker’s home and several pieces at the company.
