• Mass. pair face heroin charges

BARRE — Information from a confidential informant led to the arrest of a Massachusetts pair, who police say were found with 100 bags of heroin and an ounce of marijuana.

Lavell Lane, 22, of Springfield, Mass., and Ashley Cos, 18, of Westfield, Mass., were arraigned in Barre criminal court Jan. 19, where they pleaded not guilty to one count each of possession of heroin. Lane was also charged with one count of possession of marijuana.

Cos, who has a pending drug charge in Connecticut, was released to a parent, and Lane is being held in the St. Johnsbury prison for lack of $25,000 bail. If convicted, the pair could face up to 20 years in prison and be fined up to $100,000 apiece.

According to court papers, police were told of possible drug activity in the Berlin park and ride near Interstate Exit 7 by a federal Drug Enforcement Administration confidential informant. On Jan. 19, Berlin police were patrolling the area when they saw a red Honda Civic with Massachusetts plates cross three lanes of traffic and turn toward Applebee’s. Police said Cos and Lane were in the car and consented to a search that revealed a baggie containing 27 grams of marijuana in Lane’s pocket.

Police began questioning Cos, and she later handed over 100 bags of heroin that she had hidden in her pants. Police estimated the drugs to weigh 3 grams.

During a search of Cos’ purse, police also found 75 baggies and a used syringe.

Police said Cos told them Lane had purchased the heroin in South Holyoke, Mass., for $475. The arresting officer said the street value of the heroin in central Vermont would be between $2,400 and $2,600.
