BARRE — A Johnson man is facing several charges after police received reports of unsafe driving on Vermont Route 14 in Woodbury and East Montpelier.
Justin Martin, 23, was in Barre criminal court Wednesday to face two counts of operation of a vehicle with a criminally suspended license, careless and negligent operation of vehicle, and violation of conditions of release. He pleaded not guilty.
According to court papers, police received several complaints regarding a Chevrolet Tahoe that was being driven erratically. Several callers said the vehicle would speed and pass vehicles where it was unsafe.
One woman told police the vehicle had almost hit her head-on as she was northbound on Route 14 and that Martin’s vehicle was passing cars near a narrow bridge and around a corner.
On Tuesday, police saw the vehicle and pulled it over. They found that the driver, Martin, was under criminal suspension and had five prior citations for driving with a suspended license.
Martin was arraigned on the charge of violation of conditions of release for picking up a new charge although he has at least two other incidents pending in court.
If convicted Martin could face up to five years in prison and fined as much as $12,000. -
