BRATTLEBORO — A Vermont man will avoid jail time after he accidentally shot his fiancée in the leg.

WCAX-TV reported that 44-year-old Robert Nantell of Brattleboro pleaded no contest Wednesday to misdemeanor domestic assault charges.

Police said he and his fiancée were driving down Route 9 in West Brattleboro last fall when Nantell attempted to unload a shotgun while driving.

The gun went off and shot the woman in the leg. It eventually had to be amputated.

The two have since gotten married.
