Ernest H. Bancroft III
BARRE TOWN — Ernest H. “Skip” Bancroft III, of Sugarwoods Road, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. His family had been at his bedside.
Born Aug. 11, 1956, in Barre City, he was the son of Ernest H. and Theresa (Keefe) Bancroft Jr. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1974 and from the University of Vermont in 1978, with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.
In 1979, he married Judy Wood in Barre. They later divorced. On July 6, 2006, he married Colleen Arzberger, also in Barre. She died Feb. 17, 2008.
Following his college graduation he was an insurance adjuster for Crawford and Co. in New Haven, Conn. In 1980, he joined the sales staff at the Paige and Campbell Insurance Agency in Barre in the commercial sales and bonding department until his death. In 1988, he was designated a Chartered Property Casualty underwriter.
He enjoyed hunting at the Check Point camp in Stannard and in Ferdinand, fishing, snowmobiling and classical music, and he was a Civil War buff and lifelong Red Sox fan and an avid storyteller. Times spent with his children and granddaughter were most important to “Skip.”
His memberships included St. Monica Catholic Church in Barre, the Barre Jaycees, Barre Lions Club, the Barre Elks Lodge 1535 and the Mutuo Inc., and he had served as a Barre Town selectman and on the town Planning Commission/Design and Review Board as well as the Central Vermont Economic Development Council. He was also a corporator of the Northfield Savings Bank and Central Vermont Medical Center and a member of the Barre Town Sno-Bees.
Besides his father, Ernest H. Bancroft Jr., he leaves two daughters, Katie King and her husband, Kevin, of Groton, and Erin Bancroft, of Burlington, and four sons, Ernest H. “Buddy” Bancroft IV and Michael Bancroft, both of Barre Town, Eric Arzberger and his wife, Meaghan, of Kennebunk, Maine, and Justin Arzberger, of Rutland; and a granddaughter, Morgan Colleen King. Also surviving are two sisters, Deborah Balserus, of Williston, and Mary Ellen Natusch and her husband, Paul, of Westford, Mass.; nieces and nephews and father- and mother-in-law, Francis and Carol Kelly, of Queensbury, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his wife, Colleen, his mother, Theresa Bancroft, and brother-in-law Charles Balserus.
His Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church.
Interment will be made in Hope Cemetery in Barre.
Friends may call at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m.
