It’s been a busy, albeit steamy, summer for runners across central Vermont, and things will keep heating up with a trio of big events on tap in the upcoming week.

Saturday features a pair of local trail races, with the Barre Heritage Festival 5-kilometer event changing venues from downtown to the Millstone Hill Touring Center. That same day the Craftsbury Touring Center will host the inaugural Black River Beatdown 15k.

Next week Vermont Technical College in Randolph will offer a three-day running camp from July 26-28. Clinics will be led by Patrick Shane, who has coached the Brigham Young University women’s cross country team for 30 years.

It’s doubtful that anyone can hit up all three events, but here’s a quick description of each one:

Registration for the Barre Heritage Festival 5k begins at 9 a.m. at the Millstone Store on Church Street in Barre Town. The race starts at 9:30 a.m., with runners following Little John Road before heading onto the touring center’s trails and past a handful of quarries and historic granite piles.

The entry fee is $10 and the first 40 entrants will receive a T-shirt. For more information, contact Lori Lacroix at 479-2938.

The Black River Beatdown 15k Trail Race kicks off at 10:30 a.m. and is expected to attract some of the top trail runners from across New England. Registration opens at 9 a.m. at the Craftsbury Outdoor Center, with the gun slated to go off at 10:30 a.m.

The one-lap course includes a mix of double- and single-track on ski and bike trails, with participants covering sections of Ruthie’s Run, Lemon’s Haunt and the Northwoods single-track. The entry fee is $15 and there will be an awards ceremony immediately after the race. Prizes will be awarded to the top runner in each age group, and the men’s and women’s overall winners will receive a pair of Salomon trail shoes.

For more information, contact Tim Reynolds at 586-7767.

The Vermont Technical College running camp will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. beginning on Tuesday. Registration will be held at the start of the first day in the multi-purpose room of the campus’ recreation building. The cost for the three-day camp is $100, and local coaches who bring at least three athletes may attend for free. Coaches are also invited to participate in 4 p.m. group meetings with Shane, who has guided BYU to four NCAA championships and three runner-up finishes in the past 10 years.

To pre-register for the camp, which will be limited to 30 athletes, e-mail VTC coach Bob Dunkle at dunklebob@gmail.com or send a check to Bob Dunkle, 237 Spring Road, Tunbridge, VT, 05077.
