TimesArgus.com - We Are Vermont

Let's back wind power

Published: July 6, 2010

I love Vermont's natural environment and vistas. I spend time hiking, skiing, and enjoying our state's beautiful mountains. I just want to say that nothing would please me more than to see several more wind projects operating in Vermont.

"Not if you had to look at them every day!" some people might respond. Well, I just learned there's a wind project being considered across the Mad River Valley on Ricker Mountain, and that the project will likely be in direct sight of our home. If the project gets built, every time I look at those turbines I'll feel proud that Vermonters are finally taking steps to move towards renewable sources and a more sustainable energy future.

Will wind power solve all our problems? Of course not. We're going to need a wide range of renewable sources, as well as concerted conservation efforts, to make a difference. But we're sticking our heads in the sand if we continue to ignore the immense environmental and financial costs associated with our dependence on fossil fuels. The BP oil spill, Iraq, and climate change are just three tragic results. I believe more wind projects in Vermont, appropriately sited and reviewed, would significantly enhance our state and scenery and move us towards the green economy that will be our children's future. I hope our state leaders will help us to see these projects operating soon.

I think its kind of weird that people want to use electricity but they are seemingly unwilling to see how it gets generated. In wind power, we finally have a power source that won't potentially hurt anyone to be near (unlike coal or nuclear,)but people are NIMBY about it. What about putting wind towers up at all of the ski resorts? Those mountains already have a lot of the infrastructure built (power line towers and access roads...)

If we're going to use the power, why shouldn't we have to see it being generated?

I'm with you, Duncan. Let's put one up across from my house. I'd be happy to have it.
