TimesArgus.com - We Are Vermont

All should vote in primary

Toolbox

Published: May 9, 2010

Tired of the rhetoric yet? Appalled and disgusted by the extreme polarization on the national political scene and concerned it will pollute Vermont politics? Fortunately, this year there is an opportunity to demonstrate that the radical ideologues who judge the worth of their fellow citizens based on their mindless adherence to a particular doctrine have no place in the Green Mountains.

Just as important as voting in the general election to determine the winner from among the available choices is deciding just who those choices will be. An informed and carefully considered vote is wasted if the only choices offered are unpalatable. While in many races candidates are forced to adopt radical positions in order to woo the strident and politically active wings of their party who are most likely to participate in the primaries, in Vermont we fortunately already have in place a mechanism to reward those candidates who instead demonstrate a moderate, inclusive course. Under the Vermont open primary system, all Vermonters have a vote for who the candidates will be regardless of political affiliation. With no contested Republican gubernatorial primary and a large slate of Democratic candidates of differing views to choose among, we all have an opportunity this year to use our primary vote to promote moderation, reasoned statesmanship and true leadership.

Get involved and use your primary vote to shape the field of candidates, increasing the chance that in November you will be presented with candidates devoted to leading all Vermonters instead of pandering to only the most extreme members of their own party.

Unfortunately, this letter does not provide clear and accurate information. In the state of Vermont, you do not have to register your political party affiliation. However, on the day of the primary, when you go to vote, you have to decide whether or not you want a Democratic or Republican ballot and state that information to the poll worker - Independent candidates do not participate in a Primary...as they are Independent. So....there is some party affiliation/dedication (whichever word makes you most comfortable) required.

WV,
There is often a mistaken impression that a particular party "owns" a primary. It is not up to a particular party to decide who will be their candidate in the general election but instead under the open primary system the decision as to who will represent a particular party is up to all Vermonters regardless of the individual voter's political persuasion. In the case where there are two disputed primaries each voter can only vote in one primary and has to choose between them. This year, with no disputed Republican primary, no choice is necessary and all Vermonters get a say in who the Democratic candidate will be.

"forced to adapt radical positions"......no one is forced to do anything......they are compelled within their own integrity and values paramaters ,,,,,,,and hopefully straight with their convictions versus their compulsions of party influences.......You Cant Make A Difference Unless You Actually Get The JOB !!

Now if you are not specifically for a party....can you still vote in the primary or is that closed to registered party participants only?,,,,,Or is it that you are just expected to be an informed voter based on the "party" primary agenda and posturing?

Voting in the primary is nothing more than promoting special interest, republicans and democrats, at the expense of the taxpayers.

Why the parties organize and run their own primary? After all it is NOT a decision related to who will hold a govenrment office; it is a decision concerning who in the party will represent the party.

With most people now becoming independents it is certainly we past the time to destroy the republican and democrat political system.

With the laws they make the party system have proven themselves to be in crimal contempt of the Constitutions
