BARRE – Material from a cigarette that dropped between a chair cushion and a chair in an apartment at 45 Pearl Street filled the apartment with smoke and prompted a response from Barre City Fire and EMS personnel on Tuesday morning, firefighters said.
The occupant of the second-floor apartment at was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center for evaluation after the Tuesday morning event, but the fire department said rules prevented them from releasing the man's identity.
Firefighters said that another occupant of the apartment building saw smoke coming from his neighbor's door and pulled the neighbor from the apartment. Though there was enough smoke in the apartment to make firefighters choke, the dirty smoke detector was not sounding when firefighters arrived, Copping said.
The fire department urged people to use photoelectric and ionization smoke detectors in combination with carbon monoxide detectors and to smoke outside.
