BARRE – A 47-year-old Barre man pleaded guilty on Monday to his fourth offense of drunken driving.

Francisco Marquez already had convictions for drunken driving from 1996, 1999 and 2003 when a state trooper pulled him over in May 2009 on Interstate 89 in Montpelier. A preliminary breath test showed Marquez had a blood-alcohol level of .238 percent, which is about three times the legal limit.

In Vermont District Court in Barre on Monday, Marquez pleaded guilty to three charges: DUI-4, driving with a suspended license and violating his conditions of release.

Marquez will be sentenced during a separate hearing at a later date, but his plea deal calls for a one- to seven-year sentence with 60 days jail time, after which he would be on pre-approved furlough and enrolled in the intensive substance abuse program.

Let's hope that the system works and Mr. Marquez, if culpable, has hit bottom and gets sober.
