In Northfield, the Rutland girls hockey team won its second straight 1-0 game against top-flight opponents. After beating No. 1 U-32 1-0 on the road Saturday, the Raiders repeated the feat against No. 4 Northfield Wednesday at Kreitzberg Arena.

Kate Kurchena scored three minutes into the first period and Deanna Rodolfy and the defense made it stand up.

"We played our best in the third period," Northfield coach Chris Amell said. "We missed a couple breakaways, but it was a very even game overall. Each team had two penalties, so it really couldn't have been more even."

Rodlfy made 16 saves for the 14-5 Raiders, while Steph Morvan stopped 21 shots for the 12-5 Marauders.

Colchester 4, Burr and Burton 2

In Manchester, Micaela Thibault's 4-goal performance was the difference Colchester needed to edge past the Bulldogs.

Thibault scored her first two goals in the first period and tallied her third and fourth goals in the second period.

Burr and Burton's Jenny Coppin had a goal and an assist, and teammate Hannah Corkum scored a goal, both scores coming in the first period.

Gretchen St. Pierre posted 23 saves for the Lakers as Thalia Berard had 12 saves for BBA.

Colchester improves to 3-13-1 and the 3-13-1 Bulldogs will travel to St. Albans to play BFA on Saturday.

Woodstock 7, MSJ 4

In Rutland, the Mounties kept fighting back to keep themselves in the game. Woodstock held a 3-1 led after one period of play and was up 6-4 lead going into the third period.

Anna Sand tallied a hat trick for the Wasps and teammates Brooke Gilbreath (one goal, three assists) and Emily Donaldson (one goal, two assists) found passing lanes all game.

Colleen Shouldice scored all four goals for MSJ and Emma Shouldice had one assist.

The Green Wave's injured defenseman Brooke Wisell made her return to the ice, providing the team with an emotional lift, according to head coach Joe Ferrara.

MSJ outshot the Wasps 35-23.

The Mounties are 0-15 and will play first-place U-32 at East Montpelier on Saturday.

Brattleboro 3, Harwood 1

In Brattleboro, Emily Wilson scored twice and Maddie Rollins once while Brianna Snow stopped 16 shots for the Colonels. Snow lost her shutout in the final minute when Caroline Gilbert found the net for Hardwood.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mill River 49, MSJ 15

In North Clarendon, the Minutemen won convincingly after entering halftime with a 26-8 lead.

For Mill River, Lauren Abdelnour led the way with 11 points and teammates Chelsea Bagley had nine, and Maureen Taggart had eight.

Alex Reedy and Megan Blais were the high scorers for MSJ with four apiece.

The 11-7 Minutemen travel to Fair Haven on Tuesday.

Springfield 45, Woodstock 39

In Springfield, the Cosmos entered halftime with a 21-18 lead over Woodstock, but the Wasps turned the second half into a back-and-forth game.

For Springfield, Kayla Perham led the attack with 14 points and teammate Desmond Dana had 10 points.

Chelsea Harris led the 3-14 Wasps with 16 points as Blake Wardwell contributed nine. Carly Harris and Tiana Barcomb added seven each.

The 3-15 Cosmos travel to Windsor on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Rochester 44, Chelsea 18

In Chelsea, the Rockets went into halftime with a 18-8 lead over Chelsea but went on a 21-7 run in the fourth quarter to drastically pull away.

For Rochester, Graham Leathers led all scorers with 10 points as 10 Rockets reached the scoring column.

Rochester improves to 8-6 and will play at Poultney on Saturday.

BOYS HOCKEY

Woodstock 3, MSJ 0

In Rutland, Woodstock held a three-goal lead after one period of play. The game was suspended before the second period started due to problems with the Zamboni.

Missisquoi 6, Brattleboro 2

In Swanton, Kyle Kilbury and Ryan Ploof scored a pair of goals each to lead the Thunderbirds, who got 13 saves from Brian Fortin.

Will Inmann notched both Brattleboro scores and Mark Miller turned back 30 shots.

NORDIC SKIING

In Woodford, Brattleboro's Kalle Jahn took first place for the boys division in the Nordic cross-country skiing event at Prospect Mountain. Jahn finished the 5.25 kilometer race in 14 minutes, 39 seconds.

Brian Vargo of Mount Anthony placed second with a time of 15:25 and teammate Jacob Reisler finished third in 15:37. Woodstock's James Bassette was fourth in 16:10 and Mount Anthony's Michael Smith fith in 16:21.

Mount Anthony placed first in team scores with 18 points, with Woodstock second with 20. Brattleboro had 70 points and came in third, Otter Valley in fourth with 84 and Rutland finished fifth with 95 points.

In the girls division Elise Seyferth of Mount Anthony finished first with a time of 17:49. Brattleboro's Halie Lange placed second in 18:23, and Rutland's Grace Wright (18:54) third and Mary-Kate Cirelli (19:03) in fourth. Charlotte Malborg of Mount Anthony rounded out the top five with a time of 19:10.

Mount Anthony finished in first with a team score of 19 points. Brattleboro came in second with 40, Rutland in third with 47 and Woodstock finished fourth with 94 points.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY

Pink the Rink

On Wednesday, Feb. 10, the Castleton State College women's hockey team, along with the Rutland Regional Medical Center and the Foley Cancer Center are joining forces to Pink the Rink and raise breast cancer awareness.

The Spartans will wear collectors' edition pink jerseys donated by the Rutland Regional Medical Center against Norwich the game beginning at 7 p.m. The jerseys are currently being auctioned off on the Castleton Web site, with all proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Program at RRMC.

Tickets to the event are available at Spartan Arena, Glenbrook Gymnasium, the RRMC Gift Shop, or by calling 468-64462. Adult tickets are $6, students $3.

Admission tickets will be entered to win a chance at shooting to win a 2009 Toyota Camry, sponsored by Alderman's Toyota. One lucky fan will be chosen to shoot from the far blue line into the special goal. Fans will also have the opportunity to purchase $5 chances to shoot from the red line.

Patten Oil will have its pink truck on hand as well as handmade pink scarves, mittens and a blanket raffle to help benefit this worthy cause. The Rutland Area Hockey Association and the Rutland High School girls hockey team will be on hand at 6 p.m. for face painting and sign making in the Spartan Arena lobby. All in attendance are encouraged to wear pink to help show support.

SKI JUMPING

Harris Hill jump

Brattleboro is looking at a very strong field of ski jumpers from the U.S. and Europe for this year's Harris Hill Ski Jumping competition, set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13-14.

The impressive field of jumpers is due in part to Harris Hill hosting the USSA SuperTour finals as part of the traditional ski jumping weekend. The SuperTour, held at jumps around the country, attract jumpers looking to earn points to allow them to participate in world Continental Cup events.

Outstanding jumpers will be on hand from clubs around the U.S., including members of the women's national ski jumping team.

The competition gets under way at 11 a.m. both days. Tickets for the event are available at the gate for $15 adults, $10 youth (6-12 years), under 6 are free. Advance sale tickets are at participating local businesses, and online at brattleborotix.com.
