EAST MONTPELIER – Up to 2,000 members of Washington Electric Cooperative were without power for roughly two hours on Sunday and crews were still scrambling to restore service to nearly 500 of them at press time.

Included on that list was WEC's general manager, Avram Patt, who lives in Worcester and lost power along with many residents in Calais, East Montpelier and Plainfield, shortly after 6 p.m.

Patt said the problem was initially traced to a Green Mountain Power transmission line that feeds the East Montpelier substation. That line was repaired shortly before 8 p.m. restoring power to roughly 1,500 WEC members who live in Plainfield and East Montpelier and some parts of Calais. However, Patt said the solution created another fault in the substation that prevented power from being restored to WEC members in Worcester and the Maple Corner area of Calais. Approximately 500 of the utility's members – himself included – were without power late into the night.
