NEWPORT CENTER – Two people were killed Tuesday morning in a two-car crash on Route 100 in Newport Center, including a 3-year-old boy, according to the Vermont State Police.

The driver of one of the vehicles, Brian Woodward, 18, of Troy, was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 3-year-old passenger in Woodward's car died en route to a local hospital, said police. The child was identified as Howard Payne Jr.

Another passenger, Bonnie Page, was transported to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. where she was listed in serious condition, police said.

Woodward was driving a Buick LeSabre south at about 8 a.m. when he crossed into the oncoming lane and hit a Toyota Rav4 head-on, police said.

The driver of the Toyota was Craig Capstraw, 36, of St. Albans, who was taken to North Country Hospital in Newport, police said.

Capstraw was wearing a seatbelt but Woodward was not, police said.

The roads were dry and the weather conditions were clear and sunny at the time of the collision, and police did not say what caused Woodward to go into the oncoming lane.

State police are trying to identify a male subject who stopped to assist road crew workers shortly after the accident and are asking the person to call the state police at (802) 334-8881.
