MONTPELIER (AP) — The Vermont Environmental Court is clearing the way for a Springfield business owner to relocate an historic Hartland cemetery that is surrounded by his property.
The decision will allow J. Michel Guite to move the three sets of remains that date to the mid-1800s and are of a veteran of the War of 1812 and two of his grandchildren.
Guite has been trying to win permission to move the graves for almost two years.
The Environmental Court decision reversed an opinion of the District 3 Environmental Coordinator that said the cemetery must be preserved. Guite's attorney tells the Rutland Herald the cemetery itself still belonged to the descendants of the people buried there. And a descendant gave Guite permission to move the graves.
