Trinity women clobber Norwich

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Michelle Royals netted a game-high 17 points and Tess Donie added 10 points off the bench as Trinity steamrolled Norwich, 57-33, in Saturday's women's college basketball action at the Golden Bear Challenge.
The Bantams (1-0) used an 18-2 first-half run to turn a 12-11 deficit at the 8:36 mark into a 29-14 lead with 1:17 to go before halftime. Norwich rattled off a 6-0 scoring spurt that spanned the first and second halves to close the gap to 29-20 early in the second stanza, but Trinity scored the next nine points to open up a 38-20 lead with 14:00 remaining.
The Cadets (1-1) got no closer than 12 points the rest of the way as the Bantams cruised to the victory. Norwich was led by Ally Daniels, who scored nine points. Teammate Tara Stevenson chipped in eight points off the bench.
Trinity outscored Norwich 28-8 in the paint. The Bantams held the Cadets to 34.1 percent (14-of-41) shooting from the field.
Norwich will play Bay Path College in the Golden Bear Challenge consolation game today at noon.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Eastern Maine Community College 68, Vermont Tech 54
BANGOR, Maine – Kara Scoville's 12 points led the victors while Eliza Wakefield had 20 points and five blocks, and Kelly Vellek 16 points, for VTC. Central Maine will host VTC today.
Castleton 84, Albany Pharmacy 43
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State Cardinals fell to the visiting Baruch Bearcats in the championship game, 81-110, while Castleton State topped Albany College of Pharmacy and nabbed third place at the 2009 Cardinal Classic.
Castleton took an early, 34-16 lead in the first half and pulled away for the win over the Panthers.
Vanessa Powers earned all-tournament team honors with 21 points for the Spartans, also pulling down nine rebounds. Tarryn Bolognani topped the squad with five assists, while Kristie Dunchus had five steals.
For Albany Pharmacy, Kelly VanValkenburgh led the Panthers with 13 points and six rebounds. Teammates Nicole Izzo and Kimberly Ray each contributed two assists.
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Plattsburgh State 77, Norwich 66
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Errol Daniyan pumped in a game-high 22 points and Steve Thomas netted 16 points to help the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team defeat Norwich, 77-66, in Saturday's first round of the Cardinal Classic.
The Cardinals, who shot 52.4 percent from the field, also got 13 points from Chris Ruiz.
Norwich was led by senior Israel Guardado and sophomore Joshua Cabrera, who poured 18 points apiece. Sophomore Antonio Davis added 12 points for the Cadets, who fall to 1-1.
Plattsburgh State (2-1) got off to a fast start by scoring the first five points of the contest. Norwich responded by netting the next six points to take a 6-5 lead at the 16:02 mark. The Cardinals bounced back with an 17-7 run to build an 22-13 lead at the 10:47 mark of the first half.
A 3-pointer by Ryan Williams and baskets by Guardado and Davis ignited a 9-3 spurt, which helped the Cadets pull to within 24-22 at the 5:46 mark. Plattsburgh State closed the opening stanza on a 13-7 run to carry a 37-29 lead into the intermission.
The Cardinals opened the second half on an 8-2 run to take a 45-31 lead at the 16:39 mark. Six straight points by Norwich drew the Cadets to within eight points less than two minutes later, and the teams traded baskets for the next several minutes.
A three-point play by Guardado closed the gap to 56-48 at the 11:16 mark, but Plattsburgh State reeled off 12 unanswered points over the next three minutes to extend its lead to 68-48 with 6:53 to play. Norwich never seriously threatened Plattsburgh State the rest of the way as the Cardinals secured the victory.
Plattsburgh State held a 37-29 rebounding edge and both teams turned the ball over 15 times. Norwich shot 40.3 percent from the floor and made 5 of 19 attempts from 3-point range.
Norwich will play RIT in the Cardinal Classic consolation game today.
Vermont Tech 95, Eastern Maine Community College 62
BANGOR, Maine – Linden Smith-Hyde and Kevin Carr had 21 points each as VTC went to 2-0.
VTC extended a 41-32 halftime lead with a zone trap defense. Trent Roleau and Julian Miller added 17 and 11 points, respectively, for VTC, which will visit Central Maine today.
