HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra teams up with Hanover native Bonnie Thron, now principal cellist of the North Carolina Symphony, for an evening of music by Tchaikovsky, Shosta-kovich and Beethoven. The concert takes place on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 8 p.m., in Spaulding Auditorium. The concert opens with the excitement and flurry of a grand ball in Tchaikovsky's Waltz from the 1882 Serenade for Strings in C Major, Opus 48. Thron joins the DSO on the second work, Shostakovich's dramatic Cello Concerto No. 1 in E-Flat Major, Opus 107, which premiered in Lenin-grad in 1959 and offers moods ranging from sensitive to intense, highlighted by flashes of timpani. The concert closes with Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, one of the world's most famous, which mirrors not only the composer's genius and personal struggles but also the political turmoil of early-19th-century Vienna. The Hop's resident orchestra, the DSO is made up primarily of Dartmouth students and is conducted by Anthony Princiotti, who is also the principal guest conductor of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the music director and conductor of the New Hampshire Philharmonic.

Tickets are $20; call (603) 646-2422, or go online to hop.dartmouth.edu.
