MONTPELIER – There have been a high number of larcenies in Montpelier so far this month, and the Montpelier Police Department is offering tips to help people avoid becoming the next victim.

Montpelier police have responded to 17 larcenies since Nov. 1, including eight larcenies from motor vehicles, three from residences and six from some form of a business, police said.

The crimes have occurred throughout Montpelier but the areas that have been hit hardest include Stone Cutters Way, Barre Street and River Street, said police.

To prevent this type of crime, police encourage people to:

Always lock doors.

Roll car windows up tight.

Use your car alarm.

Park in heavily traveled, well-lit areas.

Don't leave valuables in sight.

Keep portable electronic devices such as global positioning systems out of sight.

Don't hide spare keys, because they can be found.

Don't think it can't happen to you. Act before a crime and not after.

Report suspicious activity to the Montpelier Police Department at 223-3445.

Please don't use a car alarm. Over the top, unnecessary noise pollution in Montpelier. Locking doors, however, is smart! A thief in Montpelier could just walk along a row of cars or houses, trying every door. How many of them are unlocked? Half, or more?
