BARRE – If the Christmas spirit hasn't grabbed hold of you yet, maybe that parking ticket on your windshield will help.

From Nov. 16 through 25, people who get parking tickets in Barre City can donate a toy to the "Toys for Tickets" program rather than pay the parking fine.

Toys for Tickets is part of the Christmas for Kids toy drive organized annually by the Barre City Police Department, and it provides toys for families that can't afford them. Toys for Tickets is in its fifth year and Christmas for Kids is in its tenth year.

In order to take advantage of the Toys for Tickets program, parking ticket recipients must bring their tickets and a new, unwrapped toy worth as much or more than the parking fine to the Barre City Police Department on Dec. 4 by 4 p.m.

Parking tickets issued on the eligible dates will include a notice that indicates it is eligible for the charitable program.

Last year, 300 Barre City families received toys through the Christmas for Kids program, the police department said. The goal for this year is to collect at least 1,000 toys.

Toy donations can be dropped off at the Barre City Public Safety Building or left in the donation boxes that will be in area stores after Thanksgiving.

Monetary donations can be made to the Barre Juvenile Officer's Association, c/o Barre City Police Department, 15 Fourth Street, Barre, VT 05641.
