MONTPELIER (AP) — Senate President Peter Shumlin says he'll vote against a 20-year license extension for Vermont Yankee.

Shumlin tells Vermont Public Radio he'll oppose an extension because the nuclear plant's owners haven't reached a rate agreement with Vermont utilities.

Vermont lawmakers have given themselves power to accept or reject plans to extend the license of the plant for another 20 years.

But Shumlin and House Speaker Shap Smith told Vermont Yankee owner Entergy that if it wants to be certain of a vote during the 2010 Legislative session, the company needs to reach a firm rate deal with the state's utilities by Nov. 1. That deadline hasn't been met and Shumlin tells VPR it's now unlikely the Legislature will hold a vote.
