Year of the chicken?

BARRE TOWN – This will go down as the year of the chicken in Barre Town and not just because of all the squawking over the ones Kathy Rubalcaba has been raising outside her East Barre home.
Turns out the Barre Town Thunder Chickens (how's that for irony?) have been named the 2009 Club of the Year by the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers. That's quite a feather in the club's cap given that there were roughly 130 other snowmobile clubs for VAST to choose from.
Why the Thunder Chickens? We're told it had a lot to do with the club's strong rapport with local landowners and its continued focus on improving its trail systems. However, President David Rouleau says the club's involvement in the community promoting the sport of snowmobiling in a positive way was also a major factor.
"Over the past few years we have hosted safety courses, poker rides, raised and donated over $13,000 to the … Travis Mercy Memorial Skate Park, and last (winter) hosted two freestyle snowmobile jumping shows as part of the Barre Blizzard Blast winter carnival," Rouleau says of a club whose members are looking forward to another strong season.
