MONTPELIER – The Montpelier City Council on Wednesday approved a proposal to ban the discharge of weapons, including BB guns and bows and arrows, in city parks. Such a prohibition is currently in place in Hubbard Park, and the proposed ordinance will now expand that prohibition to all parks.
The proposal read: "The discharge of a revolver, pistol, rifle, shotgun, air rifle, BB gun, arrow from a bow, or a similar firearm or weapon within the limits of Hubbard Park, North Branch River Park or any city park is not permitted without written permission of the Police and Parks Departments."
Parks Director Geoff Beyer said the city currently posts park property annually during hunting season. He said this ordinance change will save the time and money involved in that action.
He said people can apply to the Parks Department and the Montpelier Police Department if they want an exemption to the ordinance for any reason.
The council vote on the matter was unanimous.
