Montpelier 1, Missisquoi 0

SWANTON – Montpelier, the no. 6 seed, upset no. 3 Missisquoi to get its third win of the season and first of the playoffs in a 1-0 overtime victory.

Grace Brigham scored the winning goal with an assist from Jessica Lawson.

Montpelier earned 11 penalty corners to Missisquoi's five.

Hillary Sylvester saved 10 for the Thunderbirds while Danielle Baroudi saved 11 for the Solons (3-10-2). Missisquoi finishes its season with a 7-6-2 record.

Milton 3, Spaulding 0

MILTON – Spaulding, the no. 5 seed, was eliminated in the Division II field hockey quarterfinals by no. 4 seed Milton in a 3-0 game on Friday.

Down 1-0 at the half, the Spaulding team knew they had a chance of turning the game around. "We knew at the end of the first half that we hadn't played our game. We knew if we could effectively transition in the second half, we'd have a good chance of winning," said Spaulding coach Chelsey Giuliani. But the Crimson Tide also lost to Milton 1-0 in the regular season, according to Giuliani, for similar reasons: slow transitions and unfamiliar field conditions.

"Emily Miller, Hailey Cyr, and Jenna Howard all had some of their best games of the season today," Giuliani said. "It was difficult for us to push through and to finish."

Spaulding (8-7) earned seven penalty corners, and Milton earned five.

Emma Focha, Stephanie Ashline and Ally Gilbert scored for Milton.

Nikki Demers had four saves for the Crimson Tide. Sarah Winegar and Emily Mercue combined for six saves at the Milton end.

St. Johnsbury 1,

North Country 0

ST. JOHNSBURY – No. 4 seed St. Johnsbury eliminated fifth-seeded North Country with a 1-0 win in Friday's Division III quarterfinals.

Molly Goolman scored the winning goal, assisted by Victoria Magnaldi, early in the second half.

Ann Goolman made one save for the 6-8-1 Hilltoppers, while Emma St. Marie saved four for North Country (3-11-1).

GIRLS SOCCER

Harwood 0, Stowe 0

STOWE – The Harwood and Stowe girls soccer teams played to a scoreless draw on Friday.

Harwood coach Jon Hammond said his team was down four players due to minor injuries and illness. Stowe, a team with a short bench to start, was also shorthanded.

Hammond thinks his 8-4-2 Highlander team will get the no. 4 seed in the upcoming post-season.

Meanwhile, Stowe (2-10-2) has established itself as a tough team to score on and should be a dangerous low seed.

"Besides the St. Johnsbury game, where we gave up two goals at the end because we were pushing up and trying to score, we've given up mostly one goal a game, and when we've given up two it's mostly in overtime," said Stowe coach Tim Ziegler.

It was Stowe's fifth overtime game.

Taylor Burdett had five saves for Harwood, and Hannah McNulty had 10 saves for Stowe.

"She's really coming on and figuring out how to play," said Ziegler of McNulty.

North Country 1, Peoples 0

NEWPORT — Kristen Pare scored a break-out goal for North Country (7-4-3) and her teammate Sam Guyette (12 saves) made it stand up against a tough (11-3) Peoples academy team in a 1-0 girls soccer decision Friday.

"Their goalie stood on her head today; the most composed goalie I've seen in years," said Peoples coach Jim Eisenhardt, who expects Peoples will get the no. 3 seed. "I'm glad it wasn't a playoff game."

Pare's goal came on a race to the ball on a counterattack.

"It was against the run of play to say the least," said Eisenhardt, "but I give them credit, they broke us up. We totally dominated the game, but we had our chances and didn't finish."

Kaleigh Newton had four saves for Peoples.

North Country finishes its season 7-4-3.

GMVS 8, Stratton 0

FAYSTON – The GMVS girls soccer team built on the momentum of a 3-0 halftime lead over Stratton, scoring five more times in the second half for an 8-0 victory in their last game before the postseason.

Ainsley Carbone scored two goals for GMVS. Single-goal scorers were Blaire Hooper, Jackie Maier, Anna Kikut, Haleigh Carbone, Ali Spencer and Maddy Leopold.

Gumbies goalkeeper Susan Campbell turned away two shots in the shutout, while Stratton's Kelly Apenzeller stopped 21 of the 29 shots the Gumbies put on frame: "She was very good," GMVS coach Sarah Despres said of Apenzeller. "She saved some really nice shots. The score could have ended up being a lot higher."

Girls soccer playoff pairings are slated to be released on Monday, and the 7-1-1 Gumbies should be among the top seeds. Playoff games are scheduled to start Tuesday.

St. Johnsbury 1, Randolph 0

RANDOLPH – Carolyn Rowell finished off a long-scoreless girls soccer game with just over eight minutes remaining in the second overtime period to give St. Johnsbury a 1-0 victory over Randolph.

According to Randolph coach Tim Kaleita, the Ghosts had the better of the play throughout most of the game. They had a goal pulled back when a throw in, bounced into the keeper and Molly Poirier challenged for it. The ball went in, but interference was called because she hit the keeper and the score remained 0-0.

St. Johnsbury keeper Ashley Barski had eight saves. Randolph's Shayne Reis had nine saves.

Randolph finishes the season 5-8-1.

"Looks like we're around twelfth," said Kaleita. "We'll probably play the five seed or something like that. It's the first year we've dropped down, so we feel like we can take on anyone."

"Molly Poirier really stepped up big-time," said Kaleita "All the seniors did very well, especially our goalie, Reis."

Williamstown 3, Canaan 0

WILLIAMSTOWN – The Williamstown girls pulled off a 3-0 shutout against Canaan on Friday to wrap up their season at 10-2.

Kristin Brown scored the Blue Devils' first goal in the 35th minute, assisted by Erika Gauthier. In the 53rd minute, a handball in the box set up a penalty kick taken by junior center back Heather Gonier. She hit it low and away, tucked it just into the corner. In the 66th, Brown hit a restart into the box where Williamstown's top scorer, Lourdes Perry, volleyed in her 12th goal of the year.

Brown has 9 assists this season and 23 overall, making her the all-time season and career assist leader for Williamstown.

Emma Lamson had two saves, and Rebecca Marchessault saved five.

Danville 2, Richford 0

RICHFORD – After a scoreless first half, Kaylynn Zangla scored twice, with an assist from Naomi Trudeau to help Danville earn a 2-0 shutout over Richford in Friday's girls soccer action.

Tanya DeMasi saved three for Danville; Sarah Farrar had seven saves for Richford.

"We controlled the midfield. Jenny Moore and Jamie Cyr did an excellent job of controlling the ball and keeping it on their offensive end," Danville coach Jeremy White said.

Danville finishes the regular season at 5-9 and Richford finishes 3-11.

Northfield 1, Spaulding 0

NORTHFIELD – Northfield's stingy defense was helped along by a penalty kick six minutes into the second half, and when Melissa Kelsey made good on the opportunity, scoring her first varsity goal, the back line was able to hold off Spaulding for a 1-0 victory.

Spaulding picked up the intensity, pushing into the Northfield zone for the next 15-20 minutes, but came up empty-handed.

Kristi Luce saved 11 for Northfield. Spaulding's goalie had 11 saves.

Kelsey Langley and Kelly McClellan controlled well in midfield.

Northfield coach John Diebold acknowledged the efforts of all his seniors: Erin Connor, Hanna Gleason, Kelsey Langley, Olivia Drown, Hillary Rogler and Lindsey Hunt.

"Coming off the Harwood game, we knew we could play at that level …. It was a nice sendoff for the seniors with that win," said Diebold. Northfield finishes at 6-5-3.

BOYS SOCCER

Williamstown 1, Canaan 0

WILLIAMSTOWN — John Earls scored the game-breaking goal against Canaan, assisted by Ray Burgos, with 10 minutes left to play, leading Williamstown to a 1-0 victory.

Williamstown beat Canaan 2-1 earlier in the season.

Canaan keeper Ashton Stringer "played an excellent game" according to Williamstown coach Scott Hulbert.

The Blue Devils have turned around from an 0-14 season last year to a very respectable 10-4. Hulbert expects to be seeded fifth. "The boys have done a great job this year, and we're looking forward to the playoffs," Hulbert said.

CLARIFICATION

Due to incomplete scorekeeping, the full score and details of Thursday's girls soccer game between Thetford and U-32 were not reported in The Times Argus.

Iris Dayton had a hat trick in Wednesday's 5-3 U-32 win against Thetford in girls soccer. Alyssa Johnson-Kurts and Allyson George also scored for U-32. Goalkeeper Katherine Kreis recorded six saves for the win.

WOMEN'S COLLEGE SOCCER

Castleton 5, Johnson State 0

CASTLETON — Courtney Chadburn scored two goals and passed out an assist, and Brandy White added one goal and one assist to lead Castleton State College to a 5-0 win over Johnson State College Friday in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Spartan Stadium Friday evening.

Castleton controlled play throughout, firing off 52 shots to Johnson State's three. Solomon was excellent in goal, turning away 22 Spartan offerings in the contest.

Castleton finishes the regular season with a 10-5-2 overall record and a perfect 7-0-0 mark in conference play. The perfect finish is a first for Castleton since joining the NAC in 2002. Castleton also wraps up its home slate at 7-0-1, and unscored upon in 753 minutes and 32 seconds.

MEN'S COLLEGE SOCCER

Castleton 2, Johnson 0

CASTLETON — Sean Fitzgerald scored in the 70th minute and Jon Vogt added an insurance tally in the 86th minute to lead Castleton State College to a 2-0 shutout of Johnson State College in North Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Thursday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Fitzgerald scored his ninth goal of the season off a leaping header to provide the winning margin. Fitzgerald streaked down the right sideline, and was fouled just outside of the 18-yard box near the end line. Greg Klopfer (Voorheesville, NY) took the reset and lofted a cross to the left side of the goal mouth drawing out Johnson State goalie Billy Noyes (Barre, VT). The cross just barely eluded Noyes' outstretched hands and Fitzgerald redirected inside the right post.

Castleton's second goal came when Jon Vogt struck a rebound that ricocheted off a Johnson State defender and in. Chris Mulholland (Ridgefield Park, NJ hit a rocket towards the goal that Noyes was able to deflect, but it bounced off the post and back to Vogt who one timed it back towards the goal.

Noyes ended the contest with five saves, as Castleton applied constant pressure to the Badger defense. The Spartans were able to muster 29 shots, but put just seven on net as Johnson State made it difficult to find space with sometimes nine men in the penalty area. Mike Anthony made four saves in earning his sixth shutout of the season.

With the win Castleton improves to 10-6-2 overall, and 5-1-1 in conference play, clinching at least the second seed in the upcoming conference tournament, and the first round bye that comes with the top-two seeds. A Farmington win over Husson tomorrow afternoon would place Castleton percentage points ahead of the two schools and provide home field advantage throughout the tournament. In any event, Castleton will host a semifinal contest on November 1.

Johnson State falls to 6-8-1 overall and 2-5-0 in the NAC. The Badgers have locked up the sixth seed in the conference tournament, and will play a quarterfinal game on October 28.
