SOUTH BURLINGTON (AP) — There's talk of a return to full-service gas stations as a way to generate jobs for some of the 24,000 Vermonters who currently lack them.
But a leading economist is calling the idea a nonstarter.
Some people nostalgic for the day when a gas station attendant would wash the windshield, check the oil and tire pressure say pumping gas used to provide a good temporary stint for someone who lost a job in a down economy.
New Jersey and Oregon have laws that ban self-service gas stations.
But Thomas Kavet, an economist and consultant to the Legislature, says he doesn't see that happening in Vermont. He says requiring full-service gas stations is a silly idea.
In Vt., fall colors coming on strong
GLOVER (AP) — Vermont tourism officials say they're expecting a good fall foliage season, with colors ranging from burnt orange to gold to bright red already showing on many trees.
On the last weekend of September, Saturday proved to be the better day for a foliage drive, with clouds and rain in the forecast for today.
Chilly nights have trees turning color along Vermont Routes 122 between Lyndonville and Glover; 114 between East Burke and Norton; 100 from Hyde Park to Troy; 16 from Greensboro to Westmore, and 58 from Lowell to Orleans.
Other good spots were reported in Lamoille, Washington and Orange counties.
St. Johnsbury driver accused of 4th DUI
STAFF REPORT
ST. JOHNSBURY – A routine traffic stop on Railroad Street early Saturday morning turned into big trouble for a St. Johnsbury man who is expected to be charged with driving under the influence for the fourth time and without a license when he is arraigned next month.
According to police, Scott E. Keithan, 34, was pulled over for defective equipment shortly before 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Police said Keithan was subsequently taken into custody and processed for what would be his fourth drunken driving conviction and for driving with a criminally suspended license. He is expected to answer those charges when he is arraigned at Vermont District Court in St. Johnsbury on Oct. 12.
