MONTPELIER – The Montpelier School Board is expected to approve a plan Aug. 19 to continue dividing the superintendent's duties between high school principal Peter Evans and a contractor for at least another six months to a year.

John Hollar, chairman of the board, said last week that it has been difficult to find qualified candidates to replace the late Superintendent Steve Metcalf, who died earlier this summer following a battle with bile duct cancer. Metcalf had stepped down from the post at the end of April.

The school district currently is splitting the superintendent's duties between Evans and Brian O'Regan, a former Montpelier superintendent, through Aug. 15.

O'Regan is scheduled to begin full-time work at St. Michael's College in the fall and cannot continue in the interim superintendent's job past the contract date, Hollar said.

Attempts to move swiftly to fill the school post have been unsuccessful, he said. The board had anticipated that problem when it appointed O'Regan in May.

"There is not a large pool of qualified applicants for superintendent," Hollar said. The board will continue to search for a permanent replacement, hopefully finding the right candidate by January or July.

The board will contract with someone to take over the duties O'Regan had been handling, including human services and facilities management for the school system, Hollar said. Evans will continue to oversee the more school- and curriculum-oriented tasks of the job.

Hollar said Evans' pay would be increased to compensate for the additional work, but added that that amount has not been finalized.
