DUXBURY – A motorcyclist accused of leading police on a high-speed chase on Sunday night was arrested, lodged and arraigned on two criminal charges related to the incident.
Ronald W. Bryan, 36, of Waterbury was sent to the Chittenden County Correctional Facility on $5,000 bail following his arrest at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday. He pleaded innocent on Monday in Vermont District Court in Burlington to careless and negligent operation of a motor vehicle and attempting to elude an officer.
Vermont State Police Trooper Brandon Doll was clocking the speed of passing cars on Route 100 in Duxbury when he saw a motorcycle going 69 mph in a 40 mph zone, and passing three cars, according to Doll's affidavit.
The trooper pursued Bryan with his lights flashing, but Bryan didn't stop, court records state.
Doll followed Bryan for about a mile while driving roughly 50 mph until Bryan pulled into the parking lot of Harwood Union High School.
Doll radioed in to dispatch that he thought the traffic stop would take place in front of the high school. But as the two vehicles rounded the "half moon" parking lot in front of the school, Bryan steered his motorcycle back onto Route 100 and headed north, reaching speeds of at least 90 mph, according to the affidavit.
Waterbury police and other state police officers responded to the area, and Bryan pulled over.
Asked why he fled, Bryan told police that he didn't know what to do because he had just recently purchased the motorcycle and was not sure if the paperwork was in order.
He also said he had a drink earlier in the evening. A breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level of .001, which is well below the legal limit of .08.
