Barre moves on to states

LYNDONVILLE – The Barre 9-10 Little League All-Star team bounced back from an early loss and won its way through the losers bracket to win the District IV baseball tournament, advancing to the state tournament with a 5-3 win over St. Johnsbury.
Chandler Phillips pitched five innings for Barre, and Elliot Nelson earned the win in scoreless relief.
Dominic LaCasse scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning. Teammate Brad Romeo had a two-run triple and Cameron Flinn added a triple.
Barre won five straight games after losing its first, including two wins over St. Johnsbury.

Bay Sox 3, Mountaineers 1
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Vermont Mountaineers lost 3-1 to the New Bedford Bay Sox at Walsh Field in a New England Collegiate Baseball League game on Sunday afternoon.
A bases-loaded double off Vermont reliever Zack Harwood in the bottom of the eighth was the decisive hit, driving in a pair of runs to break a 1-1 tie.
New Bedford got on the board in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Derek Migrants, giving the Bay Sox a 1-0 lead.
Vermont tied the game in the sixth on an RBI single by Jake Williams.
The Bay Sox loaded the bases against Vermont starter Brad Altback in the eighth, who gave way to Harwood. Garcia took the first pitch he saw from Harwood down the right field line to drive in two runs and give New Bedford a 3-1 lead.
Kaleb Merck pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fourth save for the Bay Sox.
Jake Williams and Clay Jones each had three hits for Vermont in a losing effort. The Mountaineers have now lost five in a row.
Altback took the hard luck loss, falling to 4-2 on the season despite walking just one batter and striking out 12.
The Mountaineers return home today to take on the North Adams Steeplecats, beginning a four-game home stand. Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Recreation Field in Montpelier.
