MONTPELIER – The Montpelier Police department said Nicholas W. Kelley, 18, of Barre was arrested Wednesday for sexual assault of a juvenile.
According to police, Kelly was arrested without incident on Main Street in Barre. Authorities said Kelley allegedly had sex with a 14-year-old victim.
Kelley had been a person of interest due to his suspicious behavior when he was seen hanging around the Main Street Middle School and the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier.
Kelley advised police that he is a convicted felon, resulting from a sexual assault on a young child in South Carolina. He is not a registered sex offender, police said.
Kelley also informed authorities that he was a gang member when he lived in South Carolina.
Kelley was arraigned Wednesday for sexual assault on a minor and was held on $10,000 bail. He was transported to the St. Johnsbury Community Correctional Facility for lack of bail.
