ADDISON (AP) — Amateur radio operators in Addison County will be showing off their emergency capabilities this weekend along with thousands of others around the country.
Often amateur radio is the only way to communicate during natural disasters.
The Addison County Amateur Radio Association will set up a simulated emergency station at the Chimney Point Historic Site in Addison on Saturday and Sunday, at an annual event called "Field Day."
The public is invited to visit and see the radio's capabilities and learn how to get an FCC radio license.
Coolidge's birthday celebrated on Fourth
PLYMOUTH (AP) — Officials say Vermont's historic sites are the place to be next weekend to appreciate the history of the Fourth of July holiday.
Special events are planned at the Bennington Battle Monument, Mount Independence in Orwell and the Calvin Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth, which will celebrate the birth of the nation and the only U.S. president born on the Fourth of July.
A delegation of the Vermont National Guard will lead a march from the village of Plymouth to the cemetery, where a wreath sent from the White House will be placed at Coolidge's grave. Relatives of Coolidge are expected to attend. The march will be followed by a chicken barbecue and concert.
Church to auction Jessie Wilcox Smith painting
PROCTOR (AP) — A Proctor church is auctioning a Jessie Wilcox Smith painting three months after the sale of a different painting by the artist owned by the town's library was invalidated.
The first painting titled "Curly Locks" sold in April for almost $100,000 but the sale was invalidated after it was discovered the painting was taken from the library and sold without permission by former town librarian Mary Brough.
In a twist of fate, Union Church Pastor Russ Gates recognized the similarities of "Curly Locks" in news accounts to a painting owned by the church — "Around the Ring of Roses."
Smith did the paintings around 1914 for a Mother Goose book.
The auction will be conducted by Sotheby's Auction House in December.
