Kitten doused in gas

TIMES ARGUS STAFF - Published: June 25, 2009

BARRE – Staff at the Central Vermont Humane Society are looking for anyone with information about a 7-month-old kitten that was found off Graniteville Road and had been doused in gasoline.

The black and white male kitten was brought into the shelter by a person who found the animal outside his home. The person had given the kitten one bath to try and remove the gasoline, but the Humane Society staff bathed the kitten repeatedly, as well.

A veterinarian checked the kitten for respiratory distress, which can be caused by gasoline. Staff said they believe the kitten was intentionally doused because the gasoline had come from above the animal and the quantity was too large to indicate that the kitten had simply walked under a car leaking gas.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Humane Society at 476-3811 ext. 32.

READER COMMENTS

Unfortunatly, even though this case is very sad, this kitty was one of the lucky ones who has survived. There are so many cases out there that are much worse. The shelters spend thousands of dollars each year treating these abused and neglected animals. They rely on donations from the public which in these times have dwindled. CVHS is one local shelter who never turns away an animal in need. But they need you, they need your time and donations, whether it be cash, bottles or items from their wish list. There is no donation too small. Check out their website for needed items or give them a call to see how you can help.

Thank you, Semper. I think we're all very anxious to hear good news regarding this sweet little thing. If you hear anything further, please keep us all posted.

FYI... I have heard from a co worker who is attending to the little guy, that he is doing well considering... He has not lost his spirit despite the horrible action brought upon him. I hope the monster responsible for this regardless of age, pays whether it be criminal charges or Karma...

Once again we hear just how lacking someone is in a moral compass. Was this baby crying, attempting to escape the demon who would do such a thing? Did that person (I can't quite call you "human" .. because to do this is IN-HUMANE to say the least). Anyone who would do this to a tiny creature who most likely had no way to avoid the scum-of-life responsible for this ... watch out, people! It has been documented that they will continue to seek out other victims, escalating to young children, women, and others who are defenseless. YOU ARE SCUM!! I pray that one day, you will find yourself standing in judgement for your atrocious behavior. And a heart-felt thanks to the caring person(s) who saw & acted with generosity and kindness; and to the wonderful folks at the Humane Society who give voice to those who share our world but have far too often been overlooked, discarded, and mistreated for reasons unfathomable to me.

There's a special gasoline fed plane of hell waiting for whoever did this. If I didn't already have two kitties...

Sadly, there are many people out there who do even worse. Let's toughen the laws severely. The disgusting person that did this will get theirs either in this lifetime or the next. I'm going to go kiss my kitties now. (all six of whom were rescues from CVHS)

Thank you Mel for the constructive comments on this atrocious situation.

It is sad that there are people who would do such things or even harbor such "evil" thoughts.

Let this also be a lesson to those who may think abandoning their pets in some neighborhood or on some country road may be the best way to deal with an unwanted pet. Once you drive away, you leave behind a creature who never asked to be put in that situation, who no longer has shelter, protection, or access to plentiful food and water. They may run across a kind stranger who will take them in, feed them, shelter them, or find another good home for them. But they may run across a monster like the one who doused this kitten with gasoline. They may run across the path of a predator in the form of a fox, a fisher cat, hawk, or some other animal which will result in a painful, slow, and terrifying death.

If you have pets, please, spay or neuter them. There are programs out there to assist with the cost or offering to do it at a reduced cost. If your animal is sick and needs medical care, ask family and friends to assist with paying the talk with your vet about alternatives - I'd be happy to donate to a fund to help people pay vet bills for their pets. If you are struggling to pay the bills and feel as though you can't feed your pet, again, consider contacting a local humane society or food shelf. I personally have donated pet food to food shelves on numerous occasions. Consider buying cheaper food (yeah, I know it's not as good for your pet, but it's better than dropping them off in the middle of nowhere to meet who-knows-what fate). If all else fails and you can't keep your pet, consider finding it a new home with somenone you know or taking it to a no-kill shelter (CVHS is not a no-kill shelter, by the way).

We have a responsibility to our pets and it's a lifelong commitment. Consider that before you adopt or buy an animal you may decide in the future is disposable.

only one word comes to mind for anyone who does such a thing "evil" and one day I hope the perpetrator of such evil will get it returned in spades...the sickness of some invididuals in this world is truly and profoundly disturbing....

let me catch whoever the complete zero and loser that did this is and he/she will need more than a bath to remove the gasoline from where it's going to get put.
