NORTHFIELD — Capping off four years of high school, a procession of Northfield High School seniors marched into Norwich University's Shapiro Field House Saturday for the school's 156th commencement ceremony. The 69 members of the Class of 2009 were greeted by a large crowd of family, friends, and teachers.
First-year Principal Tom McKone addressed the graduates. "Today you take a symbolic step from being a young adult to being an adult," McKone said. "Go forward and take the best of Northfield with you, and make the best of what's ahead."
Valedictorian Sean Fricke, who gave the first of four student speeches, compared life to a road trip. "Although all of our trips might not be planned out yet, we all have a destination in life," he said.
Nolan Power, the top Northfield student at the Randolph Technical Career Center, told those gathered that he had "made the truly correct choice" in choosing to attend RTCC, where he studied film-making.
Michael Alger of the Students Taking Alternative Routes Program talked of missing his graduation a year earlier due to being on house arrest. After being granted a second chance, he gained the six credits that he needed to graduate this year.
Finally, Salutatorian Kathryn Bennett, who will be attending Harvard University in the fall, advised her fellow graduates to take pride in everything they do throughout their lives.
During the ceremony, 44 scholarships were awarded to members of the senior class. The largest scholarships, both in excess of $100,000, were the GMAC scholarship awarded to Chelsey Dion and the Norwich University scholarship, awarded to Anthony Amell.
After the presentation of scholarships the students received diplomas.
An honorary diploma was given to the parents of the late Jesse Finsen, who would have graduated this year.
