RUTLAND — State Police found the body of a missing elderly man from Shaftsbury Wednesday afternoon, less than a day after he was last seen in Danby aimlessly driving around with his dog by his side.

Police say Donald Moffitt Sr., 79, and his car were found in Salisbury, more than an hour from his home, at 1 p.m. after he went missing Tuesday night.

No foul play is suspected in Moffitt's death, according to police.

Moffitt's dog ran away from troopers when they arrived at the location in Salisbury where Moffitt's car was found, police said.

Moffitt was last seen by a resident of Brook Road in Danby Tuesday at 8:15 p.m., who told police Moffitt seemed "disoriented."

Four hours earlier, State Police Sgt. Brian Turner said police were called to a snack bar in Arlington after they received a call reporting that Moffitt drove there and looked confused.

At that time, his son picked him up and drove Moffitt home, Turner said.

Shortly after, police believe Moffitt got in his car, a red Toyota Corolla, and drove away again to Danby.

As of Wednesday morning, Turner said police had no tips on Moffitt's whereabouts, but had stepped up patrols in Danby, Mount Tabor, Dorset and the surrounding area, and had National Forest Service employees canvassing desolate roads in the area for signs of the missing man.

The investigation into Moffitt's death is ongoing and police did not reveal further information Wednesday.

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at the Shaftsbury barracks at 442-5421.
