CHARLOTTE – A mother and daughter both face domestic assault charges following a bizarre altercation that started in a car and spilled out on to the highway over the weekend.
Marcia Sprigg, 54, of New Haven, and her daughter, Jessie, 26, of Burlington were both cited following a late-morning altercation that allegedly came to blows on Saturday.
The incident, which is still under active investigation, occurred shortly before noon on Route 7 near the intersection of Lime Kiln Road in Charlotte.
According to police, Marcia Sprigg was driving her green 1998 Saab 900 south on Route 7 when she got into a "verbal confrontation" with her daughter, Jessie – one of three family members who were traveling in the car at the time.
Police said the confrontation "… escalated when Marcia Sprigg struck Jessie Sprigg in the face."
The two women got out of the car and the "encounter" continued for several minutes along Route 7. At one point, police said Marcia Sprigg got back in the car and drove along Route 7 with her son, Ryan, 25, partially in the vehicle and her grandson, Cameron, 5, seated as a passenger. Police said Marcia Sprigg clipped a residential mailbox while turning around and reportedly drove within "close proximity" of her daughter on two separate occasions, "… causing her to fear for her life."
Jessie Sprigg summoned police by dialing 911 on her cell phone.
According to police, Marcia Sprigg sustained minor injuries to her arms, hand and upper chest and Jessie Sprigg escaped with a torn shirt and no visible injuries. She did complain of minor pain at the time of the assault, they said.
Both women were cited for domestic assault and police said additional charges are pending the conclusion of their investigation.
