BARRE – A 20-year-old East Montpelier man was given 60 days in jail for leaving the scene of an accident after he ran into another man with his truck.

Paul Grant was handed the sentence in Vermont District Court in Barre on Monday, more than two years after the incident, which occurred near the St. Francis Church in East Barre.

The sentence was part of a plea agreement Grant and prosecutors reached. The full sentence is six months to three years, with all but 60 days suspended.

Olaf Hedding, 20, was the victim in the case and suffered a shattered pelvis and a broken back. He and another man had approached Grant while Grant was in the truck. The men had met in order to fight over a woman.

As Hedding and one of his friends were walking away from the truck, Grant hit Hedding.

Grant will also have to undergo anger management counseling and be screened for substance abuse counseling as part of the agreement. He will have to pay restitution, according to the agreement, though the amount to be repaid hasn't been determined.

This is all he gets for what he did to my son??? I'm a Vermonter, however, I've lost all faith in Vermont in all areas. Lets take the Department of Corrections that "lost track" of William Wheelock in Rutland last week. He shot and killed my brother Jimmy back in 1987. He was not located/turned himself in 2 days later. Vermont is becoming a very "Sick" State. Thanks Vermont for all you do for those of us that pay our taxes!!!!
