WATERVILLE (AP) — An Essex police officer is facing a criminal charge that he shot to death his neighbor's dog two weeks ago.

The Vermont State Police say that 35-year-old Michael Wootton of Waterville was cited Tuesday to appear in Vermont District Court in Hyde Park later this month.

Wootton is charged with animal cruelty.

Police say the shooting happened April 30 after Wootton's dog went to a neighbor's property and got into a fight with a dog owned by the neighbor. Police say Wootton then went home, got a handgun and fired one shot at the dog.

WCAX television says Wootton remains on full-time paid duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

READER COMMENTS

It is time to start measuring the crime rate within the illegal police organizations we have in this State.

With the number of incidents reported the crime rate would surely be above that of the general population.

But we must make sure the police Sorrell protects by keeping them out of court are included in the numbers.

We dont have peacekeepers, we have enforcers.

No more liberty just obey!
