RUTLAND (AP) — The Rutland Regional Medical Center has snuffed out its smoking ban on hospital grounds because of complaints about people smoking and littering on city streets.
In January, the hospital made its campus smoke-free.
But now visitors, patients and staff have been lighting up on sidewalks near the hospital. Hospital officials say they have received many complaints from staff and community members about the smoking and litter on city streets. So on May 1, the hospital lifted the ban.
Stabbing suspect held without bail
RUTLAND (AP) — A Rutland judge has ordered a man charged with fatally stabbing his girlfriend's estranged husband to be jailed without bail.
Thirty-four-year-old Trevor Herrick, of West Rutland, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Kerry Munger, of Benson.
He has pleaded not guilty.
Police say Herrick — who was in a relationship with Munger's wife — stabbed Munger twice in the back during a heated altercation in a Rutland mall parking lot on May 1.
He has been held since his arrest.
Last week his lawyer argued that he should not be jailed while his case is undecided.
But on Wednesday Judge Thomas Zonay ruled that because of the seriousness of the offense Herrick will remain in custody.
