NEWPORT (AP) — Two men accused of carving out a 2,000-foot ski trail on state property will serve 60 days in a state furlough program.

Paul Poulin, 48, of Derby Line, and Alan Ritter, 47, of Jay received suspended sentences of 18 to 36 months after pleading no contest Thursday to felony charges of unlawful mischief.

Ritter declined to talk about the case. Poulin could not be reached for comment.

Both men are banned from the Big Jay mountain property, where they left a visible scar in the summer of 2007, according to the Burlington Free Press.

With chain saws and brush cutters, they cleared nearly 1,000 trees from an untouched side of Big Jay, until they were caught by game wardens.

Law school, medical school rank high

SOUTH ROYALTON (AP) — Two Vermont graduate programs have won high rankings in a magazine's annual rankings of top graduate schools.

In its 2010 edition of „America's Best Graduate Schools," U.S. News & World Report calls the environmental law program at the Vermont Law School in South Royalton the best in the country. It's the 12th time the school has won that honor.

The University of Vermont College of Medicine is ranked No. 6 in the country as a place to study primary care medicine.

UVM has been ranked in the top 10 in the category four out of the last five years.
