House and Senate override same-sex marriage veto

1:25 p.m.

Gay marriage advocate Beth Robinson, center, holds back tears following the passage of a gay marriage bill in Montpelier, Vt., Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Vermont has become the fourth state to legalize gay marriage. The state legislature voted Tuesday to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of a bill allowing gays and lesbians to marry. The vote was 23-5 to override in the state Senate and 100-49 to override in the House. Under Vermont law, two-thirds of each chamber had to vote for override. MONTPELIER – Vermont has become the fourth state in the country to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Lawmakers voted Tuesday morning to override Gov. James Douglas’ veto of the bill, with a narrow victory in the Vermont House paving the way for the state to become the first to allow same-sex marriage without a court order.

The move comes nine years after Vermont made history by legalizing civil unions for same-sex couples. Now, it joins a landscape that includes Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa as the only states allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry.

“We are not done yet until every lawmaker who voted yes gets 1,000 thank you cards,” proclaimed Beth Robinson, an attorney with the group Vermont Freedom to Marry during a Statehouse victory rally after the vote. “We’re not done yet until every person who voted for this is reelected in 2010.”

Tears of joy broke out among the large crowd of supporters at the Statehouse after the final vote was announced around 11 a.m. Couples hugged, congratulated supportive lawmakers and began planning for wedding ceremonies in the fall.

Same-sex couples are expected to begin marrying on Sept. 1, the date the law takes effect.

Senators easily overrode the Republican governor’s veto in a morning vote of 23-5. The vote in the House was more dramatic: 100 members voted to override and 49 voted to sustain the veto. A two-thirds majority is needed to override a veto.

Rev. Nancy Vogel of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in White River Junction, who served on a legislative commission to study same-sex marriage last year, said some surprise votes on the House floor and one missing Democrat made her nervous that it would not pass.

“I was just so afraid that we wouldn’t get those 100 votes we needed,” said Vogel, who was joined in a civil union with her partner, Cheryl Elinsky, five years ago. “But now we’re planning for a Sept. 1 wedding.”

The human race is most closely related to the pygmy chimpanzee, sharing 98.6% of the same genes. The pygmy chimpanzee is a very bisexual creatue. Come on people, gays and bisexuals are part of the "Creators" plan. It is part of our genes!

There was anti-gay sentiment in some parts of the ancient world but only because of the need to breed lots of children in order to survive. Now that the world is grossly overpopulated, this attitude is very out of date.

Again, I hate to keep confusing you with the facts, max, but it wouldn't have mattered if Scott had shown up and voted to sustain Doogie's veto. That would only changed the margin from 23-5 to 23-6. Twenty votes were all that was needed.

But, hey, if you want to replace Scott with another Dem, be my guest.

Tell the legislature they were wrong to go against the wishes of the people. Take the time to call your representative and Senator and tell them what you really think. At this point they think they can get away with taking away your right to make such an important decision for yourself. And trust me, they'll do it again. They'll start by forcing business like Christian wedding planners to close because it is against their faith to cater to gay couples, and fertility clinics that would respectfully decline to provide services to lesbian couples because doing so would violate their deepest held convictions and faith. Just wait for all the lawsuits to begin. Oh, and I'm sure you won't mind having your kids being invited by their teachers to their gay wedding and you not being able to opt your kid out of the trip because this is now called 'diversity education.' and opting them out is, well, not an option despite the fact that such 'teaching' violates your deepest held beliefs. See what you all let happen by your silence?

Please don't make these legislators wait until the next election to tell them how disgusted you are when you vote against them. Call or email them NOW and tell them.

I'm actually impressed by the fortitude of the Vermont Legislature for seeing beyond the braying of hate and fear and seeing an opportunity to make a little history. Unfortunately, it has revealed (on here) some very frightening people. For this reason, I'm glad this issue has come to fruition. It has shown the average Vermonter some of the adversity gays and lesbians have had to suffer, and overcome over many, many years.
From the Stonewall Riots, to the shooting of a San Francisco councilman, gay and lesbian men and women have had to stand up and take what misinformed or just plain mean, hostile and violent folks have dished out. This gay marriage bill and the testimony that lead to it has shown the average person who we are, and that we are no different in how we live or love than anyone else.

Karen, the VT legislature's vote may be a crock to you, but it is the reality now in Vermont, and that is not going to change, however much you want it to from California. (Why you care at all is beyond me, since presumably this legislation won't affect you in the slightest.) I wouldn't have guessed when I was growing up that my hometown newspaper, the Times Argus, would have a story like this one day. It's historic, as were the victories in MA, CT, and IA. (By the way, it will be a lot more difficult to overturn that IA ruling than you think, so get used to it.) The tide is shifting. Our governor is on the wrong side of history. The 2/3 majority in both VT houses is on the right side of history and a sign of the future. The anger of the opposition will pass when it becomes obvious that their lives will go on no different than before.

That's an interesting point, particularly given that the right to marry is conferred by the State. You can have all of the religious marriage ceremonies you want, but unless you have a state license, your marriage is not recognized by the state.

BTW - My religious references were made in a satirical fashion. "You don't mix politics with religion," eh? Wow... That's all that I've heard by those opposing this legislation: "This is against God's law," "the Bible says that marriage is between a man and a woman," etc., etc.

I dont blame Douglass in this issue as he has said from the start that he didnt support this. His veto was issued yesterday, when committee's and the house and senate have been going over this for the last couple of months. So that is where i place blame. I am not a fan of Douglass at all, but he wasnt the one wasting time. When asked on the issue, he gave his answer. When he said he would veto it, he did in a quick fashion. Doesnt sound like time wasting to me.

Dont worry, I WILL remember this November, next November, and every day in between that once again the far left liberals in VT put the interest of the special groups ahead of everyday Vermonter issue's.

Gay marriage has passed the legislature in Iowa, that's true, but it isn't law yet, and in the next three weeks there will be lots of action to see that the court's ruling there doesn't go into effect. As a California resident, I can tell you that, to be honest, there was a slight increase in revenues when all these gay couples flooded the state to 'marry.' I can also tell you that it gave no real lasting benefit to the state. Besides that, in case no one bothered to check, the report on which this so-called benefit was based is from the UCLA Williams Institute. Gee, who do you think the Institutes major donors are? You got it! Gay right's groups. You can go to their website and look at their donor list. I don't know, but if I were creating a report and I got my major funding from groups like that, I don't think I'd be issuing a report that was unfavorable to my donors. In other words, that study is completely biased and no one should take it seriously. It's a total crock, just like the Vermont legislature's vote.

I'm sorry, but I have to correct something in this article. Gay marriage is not legal in California. It was forced into law by the courts in Massachusetts and Connecticut. This article says Vermont is the 4th state to make gay marriage legal. Well, okay the California State Supreme Court tried forcing it on us and allowed it for a few months, but we the voters voted to support traditional marriage. In every state where the voters have been asked to vote on this issue, they have said NO to gay marriage. I'm sure if they had been asked, the voters of Vermont would have voted the same way. I hope every one of the legislators who voted for this has enjoyed their time in public service, because the voters certainly will not let them continue. Even though I live in California, I promise that I will donate to any candidate running against anyone who voted for this bill, and to the Republican candidate if the incumbent decides wisely to not run again.

So many "good" and "moral" Christians out there... All good Christians know that Jesus would have turned His back on the GLBT community and do whatever he could to make them as miserable as possible. That's what he stood for, right? NOT...

It's amazing to me how hypocritical some people are. It's okay to hate people that disagree with you (Jesus would approve since you're purportedly doing His work) but it's wrong for the GLBT community to LOVE and MARRY whomever they wish (Jesus wouldn't approve because he was clearly anti-love).

Congratulations to the GLBT community, including my father, an aunt and numerous friends and family around the country. I hope that this small triumph here in Vermont helps to chip away at the bigotry, ignorance and hysteria that is all too prevalent both here in the U.S. and around the world!

This is a great and historic day for the state of Vermont. We are the first state to successfully achieve marriage equality via the legislative process. (Don't worry, Can't Stand Ignorance, this law will stay in effect--we're there, it's a done deal.) Our supportive legislators and all those who made this happen, including the RH editorial page, deserve big thank you's. Governor Douglas will go down in the history as the man who tried and failed to stop progress. Shame on him.

For those of you who oppose this bill, the good news is that your lives will not change one bit because of it.

"traditional marriage meaning is now associated with a sick sinful perverse disorder some of us have, and all others have to live with it. thanks"
-its me again margrette

If you feel that strongly about it feel free to move, get divorced, or never get married.

Way to go Vermont, good job VT Congress. I too will remember in November - and be proud.

Now lets move on to something else - like the economy.

Doogie takes a dive.

Yeah, jim equals joblessness - give him two more and he'll have you homeless, to boot lasted less time in the State House Door than Wallace did in the School House Door.

These ignorant bigots not only don't have a case, a clue or a reason, they don't have any staying power or the ability to remain on their feet.

Today same-sex marriage. Next, the budget.

This is a great day in Vermont history. Not only did we manage to do the right thing for our gay families and neighbors, we did it by overriding our GWBush-like Governor.

To those who oppose gay marriage, I want to say thank you for all you have done and continue doing in pursuit of freedom, liberty, and democracy. I regret this situation has become so difficult for us. Thank you for remaining part of our state in spite of this division. Thank you also for putting so much on the line in fighting for your beliefs. I pray the Lord will continue protecting us as he has, bringing us to this point in our long living democracy.

well at least now maybe the house and senate will start working and amount to something finally. so disgusting with the economy in the toilet and thousands out of work that gay marriage is all they could focus on. at least now the self centered people behind this will go crawl back under their rock so this state can move forward to try and solve important, real issues.

and best of all, Paul O'Complain will shut up now about how not being able to get married was wrecking his family. what a joke.

Have fun with marriage because if you thought the govt was interfering with you before, wait till divorce time rolls around. LOL. Enjoy it!

Congratulations to the citizens and legislators of the great state of Vermont. You have TRULY done a GREAT service to ALL people today.

Your Rethuglinazi Governor will fade into obscurity, just like Gov. Wallace, Gov. Faubus, Gov. Maddox, et al.

We Californians are envious, but we're hopeful, that the one-two punch of Iowa and Vermont will influence OUR Supreme Court.

Yeah, but fortunately there's fewer and fewer of you all the time.

The human race has evolved this far in spite of you.

We'll survive.

Thank you Vermont for being a true leader and being on the right side of history. I am very proud of our State for having the courage to do the right thing. It is unfortunate that our Governor had to stand in the way of history!

As a happily married heterosexual - I am so pleased that this happened. Whether or not this law remains in effect is yet to be seen....I'm just happy to see that our Legislators (yes, the ones we elected) stand up to the Governor and his blatant disregard for the political process.....I AM SO PROUD!
