WILLISTON (AP) — The Pine Ridge boarding school for students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities will be closing its doors in June after graduation.

The closure of the Williston school means 22 students will need to make other educational arrangements this fall. It will also put 20 people out of work.

Headmaster Dana Blackhurst says the closing is due primarily to the recession and a $1.6 million debt he inherited when he came to the school two years ago.

In January, the school laid off 16 people.

The school was founded in 1968. It serves students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities.

It's unclear what will happen to the school's 136-acre campus.

Blackhurst says he hopes a buyer will emerge and start a new school.

Vermont to get $756,000 from carbon auction

MONTPELIER (AP) — The state of Vermont is set to receive $756,000 in proceeds from the latest auction held as part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

The money will be used to help Vermonters save energy.

Vermont is one of 10 Northeast states that take part in the auctions.

The Greenhouse Gas Initiative is the first mandatory program under which energy producers are required to buy enough allowances to cover every ton of carbon dioxide they emit.

Vermont is planning to auction 1.2 million carbon allowances each year. The revenue will be used to boost the state's energy efficiency initiatives.

The Public Service Board is planning to appoint a panel of trustees to oversee how the money will be spent in the state.
