BARRE – The Spaulding wrestling team locked up the Northern Vermont Athletic Conference regular-season title with a pair victories on Tuesday.

The Crimson Tide opened the night with a 63-0 victory over Mount Abraham and then held on for a 40-26 victory over Vergennes.

"For the last week or so we had talked about how Vergennes would be coming after us," Spaulding coach Dave Fournier said. "They had a pretty good run with Mount Anthony a little over a week ago and they put a scare in them. At the start they were pounding at our heads and attacking and we knew we had to be ready to go."

Spaulding's wrestlers who prevailed against Vergennes were Kyle Edmunds (115 pounds), Damian Mason (125 pounds), Zack Rillo (130 pounds), Evan Bilodeau (145 pounds), Steve Rich (160 pounds), Bryant Cleveland (171 pounds), Reuben Stone (189 pounds) and Adam Reed (215 pounds).

"Zack Rillo got us off to a nice start at 130 with a hard-fought 8-4 win," Fournier said "He's been a little dinged up the last week and the kid took him down and Zack had to fight his way back into the match."

Rich recorded the only pin of the night against Vergennes, while both Bilodeau and Stone earned payback against their opponents.

"Evan had a rematch with a kid he'd wrestled with and he pulled out a 9-6 win," Fournier said. "Reuben had split a couple close matches with his Vergennes opponent earlier in the year and he won 7-1, so he opened it up a bit this time."

According to Fournier, his team will take today off and then shift its focus to the upcoming stat championships.

"This wrapped up the Northern Vermont Athletic Conference for us, so our goal this week is heal up and our goal next week is to get ourselves mentally and physically ready for states," Fournier said.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Spaulding 45, Rice 34

SOUTH BURLINGTON – The Spaulding girls basketball team improved to 16-3 on Tuesday with a 45-34 victory over Rice.

The Green Knights stayed within striking distance for the first 16 minutes, holding the Crimson Tide to five second-quarter points to head into halftime facing a 19-17 deficit.

After that, it was all Spaulding

"Kristy Thygesen came out and made two 3-pointers and a 2-pointer to start the third quarter and that really jump-started us," Spaulding coach Tom Roberge said. "We got a good cushion and we hit our free throws in the end. We got everybody in and our defensive effort was outstanding. They didn't have a quarter with more than 10 points, so you have to be happy with that."

Leading the way for Spaulding were Marissa Velez (11 points, five assists), Linsey Barclay (11 points, nine rebounds) and Thygesen (10 points). Brittany Pfaff scored a team-high nine points for the Green Knights, who fall to 8-11.

Spaulding will host CVU on Thursday at 7 p.m. for Senior Night. All proceeds from the game will be donated to help breast cancer research.
