MORRISTOWN – The Morristown Police warned Monday that the department has taken complaints of a phone scam targeting residents of Morrisville and surrounding communities.

The caller pretends to be a relative who has been in some type of accident in Canada. The person requests money sent by Western Union so that they can pay for the damages of the rental car, police said in a release.

The scammer tells the victim the police are helping them and that they can be reached at a certain number, which is bogus. Police said there has been one person victimized so far.

According to police, using family information of the victims is a new tactic. Authorities are advising people to be cautious, hang up if you don't recognize the voice or name of the caller, and to never send money to someone unknown by Western Union or give out personal information over the telephone.

Anyone with questions or who has received this type of call is asked to call the Morristown Police at 802-888-4211.
