Second-half surge keys Montpelier boys basketball victory

LYNDONVILLE — The Solons erupted for 50 points in the second half and closed out a 81-77 victory over Lyndon from the foul line in boys basketball Friday.

Sam Brigham and Chris Gaboriault scored 62 of Montpelier' 81 points with Brigham dropping in five three-pointers on his way to 33 points. Gaboriault had 29 as the Solons moved to 4-5 for the season.

Trailing by eight points at the half, Montpelier outscored the Vikings 29-18 in the third quarter.

"Sam caught fire in the second half," Montpelier coach Joe Salerno said. "We hit free throws down the stretch. It was a great game all around."

Jake Garfield had 23 for Lyndon which fell to 2-7.

The Solons are at Randolph Friday.



BOYS BASKETBALL

Blue Mountain 68, Twinfield 45

MARSHFIELD — Leading by just three points after three quarters, Blue Mountain blew open Friday's boys basketball game with Twinfield with a 31-point fourth quarter to win 68-45.

Charles Jobin led the 3-7 Bucks with 25 points, but had plenty of help from Joshua Cota (14 points) and Joe Desroches (10 points).

Twinfield, which fell to 2-5, got 13 points from Chris Link and 12 points from Shayne Flood. The Trojans travel to Black River today.



Hazen 65, Thetford 55

HARDWICK — Tied at halftime, Hazen outscored Thetford 18-10 in the third quarter to hand the Panthers their first loss of the season, by a 65-55 score in boys basketball on Friday.

Billy Boyd led three Hazen players in double figures with 18 points (and 14 rebounds), while Tanner Benjamin scored 13 and Billy Vasiliadis added 11 for 9-1 Hazen. Thetford, now 6-1, got 22 points from Jason Gray.

The Wildcats are off for a week before traveling to meet Stowe on Friday.



Williamstown 55, Northfield 41 WILLIAMSTOWN — The first half, and Steve Manwaring, carried Williamstown to a 55-41 boys basketball victory over Northfield on Friday.

Manwaring scored 18 points and added 15 rebounds to lead the 3-2 Blue Devils who ran to a 12-point edge at the half. Carson Richards added 15 and Troy Laughlin had 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Northfield got 20 points from Cody Chamberlain and 12 points from Adam Daly.

The Blue Devils host Arlington on Monday.



Cabot 47, Sharon 41

CABOT — The Huskies came back from a third-quarter deficit with a 19-point fourth frame to advance to the championship game of its own tournament with a 47-41 boys basketball victory over Sharon Academy Friday.

The Huskies will meet Canaan in the championship game at 2:30 p.m. today while Sharon will take on Craftsbury in the consolation game at 1 p.m.

Mike King and John Maxfield each scored 11 points for the 5-4 Huskies.

Michael Young-Ward and Colin Pope each had 10 points for 5-2 Sharon.



WRESTLING

Spaulding 44, Randolph 9

Spaulding 47, Enosburg 18

ENOSBURG – The Spaulding wrestling team picked up two dominating wins on Friday night with a 44-9 win over Randolph and a 47-18 win over host Enosburg.

Randolph's Matt Simpson defeated Spaulding's Damian Mason at 125 pounds and teammate Jacob Flint pinned Spaulding's Bogdan Griffith at 189 pounds in 3:17. Taylor Young (130 pounds), Tyler Cleveland (135 pounds), Artie Busano (140 pounds), Taylor Lozier (189 pounds) and Nick Aja (285 pounds) all earned forfeit wins for Spaulding while Jeremy Fischer (152 pounds) earned a technical fall over Randolph's Blake Quillia, Matt Felix (160 pounds) and Jacob Rillo (215 pounds) all earned wins for Spaulding.

Against Enosburg, Mason, Felix, Lozier, Aja and Griffith all earned forfeit wins for Spaulding while Busno pinned Callin Blouin in 1:47 at 140 pounds, Fischer pinned Kace Nelson in 2:32 at 145 pounds, Gabe Aguilar pinned Cody Barnes in :39 at 152 pounds, and Jacob Rillo pinned RJ Nolan in 3:09 at 215 pounds.

Spaulding will compete in the West Side Duals at West Springfield (Mass.) High School this weekend.



Harwood 42, St. Johnsbury 24

DUXBURY — Harwood picked up wins in five weight classes and its first victory of the season, a 42-24 wrestling win over St. Johnsbury on Friday.

Ben Eurich (at 103), Josh Kernan (135), Zeb Benoit (140), Alex Sowa (160), and Finlay Miller (185), scored victories for the 1-2 Highlanders.

Tomas Cohen picked up the lone win for St,. Johnsbury.

The Highlanders will wrestle at the Otter Valley Tournament in Brandon today.



MEN'S HOCKEY

UVM 3, BC 3

BURLINGTON — Junior Brian Roloff converted a power-play goal with one second remaining on the clock to tie the game at 3-3 in Hockey East action at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Senior Captain Dean Strong and senior assistant captain Peter Lenes each picked up an assist on the Roloff goal.

Junior Viktor Stålberg netted his ninth goal of the season to even things at one goal a piece at the 12:24 of the second period. Junior Patrick Cullity (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Dan Lawson were each credited with the assist.

Lenes scored on a one-time slap shot off a face off won by Strong with 9:33 left in the third period to even the score 2-2.

Senior Kyle Kucharski tallied twice to lead the Boston College offense. Freshman Cam Atkinson also found the back of the net for the Eagles.
