HARTFORD (AP) — The town of Hartford is considering laying off as many as six town employees if officials can't find significant savings in town budgets. Town officials say they are facing a 70 percent increase for employee health insurance and a loss of up to $130,000 in state funding. Town Manager Hunter Rieseberg says that if the police, public works and fire department unions agree to forgo their 2.25 percent annual wage increases it could save four jobs.
Rieseberg says he's already eliminated six unfilled positions.
The town's police contract is being negotiated. The firefighters and publics works contracts are set. Alan Beebe of the firefighters' union says the town hasn't formally asked to reopen their contract.
