Vermont considers Amtrak routes cut

MONTPELIER (AP) — The economic crisis is forcing the state of Vermont to consider cutting back or eliminating the state's two Amtrak passenger train routes.

The state pays almost $5 million a year to subsidize the routes.

Ridership is increasing on the Amtrak Vermonter, which runs between St. Albans and Washington, and the Ethan Allen Express, which travels between New York City and Rutland.

Transportation Agency spokesman John Zicconi says that as the state's budget shortfall grows, officials are looking at any ways possible to save money.

Options being considered include eliminating one of the trains or reducing the length of a route.

Zicconi says no changes will be made to the Amtrak service without legislative approval.

Our rail is now a rail trail and you can be sure they will find money for it's continuation in the budget. I don't want to hear about VAST - they do not pay the total cost, our tax dollars contribute also. (one example is law enforcement)

First and foremost--- DO NOT CUT THE MEASLEY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION THAT EXISTS... IMPROVE IT!
The trains to NYC and DC are nearly worthless, and should return to being what they were in their heyday... night trains.
It used to be that you could get on the train in Montpelier around 10 PM and wake up in NYC around 7 AM downtown. The return was similar, arriving in Montpelier around 6 AM.
Now the train requires that you lose a complete day in each direction... stupid.
Instead of threatening to end subsidized rail service, our idiotic "public service" honchos should, instead of sleeping at their desks & waiting to collect their huge pensions, spend some of their precious nap time looking into how we can have a vibrant & workable public transport rail and attach it to a light rail system that can move people where they need to go.
There is no excuse for not having a light rail between Montpelier & Burlington & Rutland and even Bennington! Lazy State workers putting in the hours and accomplishing nothing is what we get for our millions.
