RUTLAND — A Proctor man charged with attempted murder following a shootout with police is expected to enter a plea on Wednesday.

Fifty-one-year-old John M. Walters, who was hospitalized after the Nov. 19 gun fight in his home, appeared in court Tuesday with his hands wrapped in bandages but invoked his right to wait 24 hours before enter a plea to the charges.

He is being held on $1 million bail.

The incident began when Sgt. Thomas Mozzer responded to a call by Walters' wife, who said he was depressed and drinking and that she was afraid he was going to leave on his motorcycle.

Officials say the two men fired about 20 shots at each other. Mozzer was not hit; Walters was wounded in the chest, arm and legs.

There should be no plea deal. This dirtbag should be behind bars for the rest of his life. He tried to kill a Trooper. If he was in any other State, he may be looking at the Death Penalty. But not Vermont. We will give him a hug because he was wounded. What a load of crap if this gets plead out. Even Sergeant Johnson's killer didn't get life. Which is another load of crap!!!What does that say to our law enforcement officers? Hey, somebody shot at you, oh well don't worry, they will spend some time behind bars, but they will be out eventually. THIS IS WRONG!!!!!!
