BURLINGTON – Former University of Vermont men's hockey standout and three-time captain Jaime Sifers has been called up to the NHL by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Sifers had two goals and six points in 18 games with Toronto's AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, this season. The Maple Leafs begin a three-game road trip Monday evening against the Los Angeles Kings.
Sifers was just the second three-time captain in Vermont's history and played for the Catamounts from 2002-06. He saw action in 143 games in his career, tallying 15 goals and 55 assists for 70 points. He was a finalist for the 2006 Humanitarian Award, given each year to college hockey's finest citizen. In addition, he was a semifinalist for the Walter Brown Award, presented annually to the best American-born college hockey player in New England.
Sifers becomes the sixth former Catamount to be on an NHL roster this season, joining Torrey Mitchell (2007, San Jose), Eric Perrin (1997, Atlanta), Martin St. Louis (1997, Tampa Bay), Patrick Sharp (2002, Chicago) and Tim Thomas (1997, Boston).
